What is the Peace Learning Center?

The Peace Learning Center at Granada Preparatory School is a school-wide program that teaches conflict resolution, restorative practices, and social-emotional skills through shared community agreements practiced by every student, teacher, and parent. It is the foundation of how GPS builds character, manages conflict, and creates a safe, inclusive environment for learning.

Unlike add-on SEL curricula, the PLC is not a class or a program students attend. It is how GPS operates, woven into morning meetings, classroom culture, conflict resolution, and every interaction on campus.

Peace Learning in Action

The PLC isn't theoretical, it shapes daily life at GPS. In practice, this looks like morning community circles where students share and listen. It looks like conflict resolution protocols where a trained mediator helps both sides understand each other. It looks like 7th and 8th graders serving as peer mediators for younger students.

When conflicts arise, and they do, because GPS is a real community with real children, the response is restorative, not punitive. The question isn't “who's in trouble?” but “what happened, how did it affect everyone, and how do we repair?”

This approach doesn't just reduce discipline issues, it builds the empathy, communication, and emotional intelligence that IB values as essential life skills.

Aligned with IB Values

The Peace Learning Center directly supports four IB Learner Profile attributes:

Principled

Acting with integrity and fairness

Caring

Showing empathy and compassion

Open-Minded

Respecting diverse perspectives

Communicators

Expressing ideas and listening actively

Yes. While many schools teach social-emotional learning, GPS's PLC is a comprehensive, school-wide program with shared agreements that every community member practices. It is one of the key reasons families choose GPS over other independent schools in the San Fernando Valley.
