Building Confident Learners

The Primary Years Programme at Granada Preparatory School serves Kindergarten through 5th Grade students within the IB PYP framework. Learning is organized around transdisciplinary themes and driven by student inquiry, connecting subjects to real-world contexts that develop curiosity, confidence, and a love of learning.

With a 7:1 student-teacher ratio, PYP at GPS is deeply personalized. Teachers know each learner's strengths, challenges, and passions, and design instruction to meet them where they are.

Learning Through Inquiry

The PYP organizes learning around six transdisciplinary themes that connect subjects to the real world. Students don't study math, science, and language in isolation, they investigate meaningful questions that weave everything together.

The PYP Exhibition, 5th Grade Capstone

Every 5th grader completes the PYP Exhibition: they identify a real-world issue, conduct independent research, and present their findings and proposed actions to the school community. It's the culmination of everything they've learned.

Primary Years FAQ

The Primary Years Programme is an IB framework for ages 3–12 that uses transdisciplinary themes to connect subjects to real-world contexts. At GPS, students engage in units of inquiry that develop curiosity, critical thinking, and global awareness. Learn more about PYP.
Classes begin at 8:15am with dismissal at 3:00pm (2:30pm on Fridays). The day includes core subjects, specialist classes, outdoor play, lunch, and dedicated inquiry time, with Extended Day Care available until 6:00pm for working families.
The PYP Exhibition is the culminating project for 5th Grade students. They choose a real-world issue, conduct independent research, and present their findings and proposed actions to the school community, a strong preparation for the MYP Community Project that follows in 8th Grade.
Homework is purposeful and age-appropriate, focused on reading, reflection, and extending the IB inquiry from class rather than busywork. The amount increases gradually from Kindergarten through 5th Grade.
Students use iPads and Chromebooks as tools for research, creation, and collaboration, always in service of inquiry, never as a substitute for hands-on learning. Visiting families can see this in action during a campus tour.
The transition is seamless because GPS offers both PYP and MYP on the same campus with the same community values. 5th graders are mentored by middle school students and gradually introduced to MYP expectations. Explore Middle Years.
